Gummy Smile
What Is A Gummy Smile?
A common concern, where a large section of the gumline shows above the teeth when smiling. It can be treated with a short series of Botox injections, which help to relax muscles and lower the top lip. While orthodontics and surgery can also be used to treat a gummy smile, they are invasive, costly, and time-consuming, with discomfort and recovery needed. In contrast, Botox injections yield a relatively quick result that lasts for several months.
Find out moreA gummy smile can be caused by a range of factors, usually small teeth, a short upper lip, or a lip that lifts too high while smiling. However, certain conditions can also play a role – for instance, enlarged gum tissue or maxillary excess, which is a protrusion of the upper jaw and teeth.
Please avoid St John’s Wort, alcohol, caffeine and ibuprofen at least 24 hours before and after your appointment.

During your treatment, Botox may be injected either side of the nose, and in the area between your upper lip and nose to temporarily freeze the muscles that contract or elevate when you smile. The effects of treatment develop within 2-3 weeks and last an average of 3 months.

Orthodontics (braces) or surgery may be able to improve the appearance of a gummy smile if the cause is relating to the teeth. However, many cases are caused by thin lips or the lips elevating too much when you smile, and these methods may not be suitable treatments. Surgery and orthodontics can also be expensive, create a permanent change and may feel uncomfortable.
